“In competitive Multiplayer, Switch 2 aims for 60fps and, according to DF, hits that target most of the time.”
Digital Foundry’s tests reveal that the input lag in docked mode is around 81ms, while portable mode lags at 100ms, compared to the PS5’s 49.1ms. The worst-case scenario in portable mode can even reach 125ms, which Digital Foundry describes as “actually deleterious to performance.” Despite these drawbacks, Digital Foundry acknowledges the efforts of port specialist Digital Legends, with support from Infinity Ward, in adapting the game for the Switch 2. However, despite these efforts, Multiplayer enthusiasts on this platform will inevitably face longer response times.
Outside of Multiplayer, the Campaign mode runs at 30fps, which IGN’s Simon Cardy found satisfactory. He noted that while the visuals are less detailed, with flatter textures and smoother character models, the gameplay remains fluid at 30fps in 4K when docked. Cardy remarked on the visual downgrade compared to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, but acknowledged that it aligns with the Switch 2’s capabilities. For Nintendo users who have been waiting over a decade for a Call of Duty release, this version delivers the core experience, albeit with some visual compromises.
“If you’re solely a Nintendo owner who’s been locked out of Call of Duty for over a decade, you’re getting a version of Modern Warfare 4 that feels every bit as snappy as the series usually is.”
The return of Call of Duty to a Nintendo console is linked to Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. As part of this merger, Microsoft pledged to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms, a commitment made to ease regulatory concerns during the acquisition process. In December 2022, Xbox head Phil Spencer emphasized Microsoft’s dedication to expanding gaming access, stating, “Microsoft is committed to helping bring more games to more people — however they choose to play.”
