Nvidia has shifted its focus towards AI, even integrating gaming into its ‘Edge Computing’ category in earnings reports.

Despite these rumors, Nvidia has not officially confirmed the discontinuation of the RTX 5090. This situation mirrors past speculation about the RTX 5070 Ti, which also faced discontinuation rumors that proved inaccurate. In that case, production delays were due to VRAM being redirected to data centers, but the RTX 5070 Ti remained in production. A similar scenario could unfold for the RTX 5090, with supply slowing and prices escalating.

For many consumers, the RTX 5090 has been nearly unobtainable for some time. Originally launched in January 2025 for $1,999, its price has since soared to nearly $10,000. This makes it impractical for most individual PC builders, effectively rendering the RTX 5090 out of reach for the average gamer.

If Nvidia does halt RTX 5090 production, the impact would be most significant on prebuilt gaming PCs. These systems, often bundled with the RTX 5090, have not experienced the same price hikes as standalone GPUs. Currently, prebuilt systems with the RTX 5090 are more cost-effective than purchasing the GPU alone, but this could change if production stops.

As the market waits for Nvidia’s next-gen GPUs, rumored for a 2028 release, high-end graphics card prices may remain inflated.

The future of the RTX 5090 remains uncertain, but what is clear is that its price will likely continue to rise amidst ongoing supply constraints. With Nvidia’s next-generation graphics cards not expected until 2028, affordable high-end GPUs could remain elusive for some time.
