Archery is easily the best sport offered in Sports Resort.
In Archery, players navigate four distinct courses across Wuhu Island, providing a satisfying experience as they aim and hit targets using the Joy-Con. The sport’s depth and hidden challenges offer hours of enjoyment, making it a favorite among friends. However, single-player experiences lack the same excitement, as the competitive nature of these games is best enjoyed with others. The Island Crown mode attempts to add structure by having players climb ranks in nine sports, but it fails to maintain long-term engagement.
So much of the joy of these games is heightened when folks in the room are cheering, yelling, and getting so into it you need to remind everyone to keep the Joy-Con wrist strap on.
Sports Resort truly shines in multiplayer settings. The lively atmosphere created by friends and family transforms mundane sports like Golf into thrilling competitions. Quick menus facilitate seamless transitions between games, ensuring continuous engagement. Skateboarding, a standout in the collection, utilizes a unique control scheme that mimics a mini Tech Deck, allowing players to perform tricks and race on various courses, fostering a spirit of friendly rivalry.
Despite its strengths, Sports Resort has some limitations. Certain sports require two Joy-Con per player, which can be a hurdle if additional controllers are unavailable. However, an update clarified that multiplayer Power Cruising can be played with a single Joy-Con, and older controllers from the original Switch are compatible with most sports, except Skateboarding.
For those interested in exploration, the Sightseeing Tour mode offers a chance to discover Wuhu Island’s points of interest, adding a narrative layer to the sports experience. This mode enhances the game’s world by connecting different sports and creating a sense of place. However, repetitive backgrounds in some sports, like Tennis and Thumb Wrestling, can detract from the overall excitement.
Online play offers casual and pro-league options, allowing friends to compete from afar. While the lack of a spectating feature is a missed opportunity, the game’s special modes, such as Bowling with obstacles and Archery competitions, provide fresh, albeit temporary, diversions. Players earn Spocco Points to purchase randomized cosmetic items, adding a layer of customization despite the frustration of not being able to choose specific rewards.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort excels as a party game, ideal for social gatherings or casual play. While single-player modes add depth, they don’t overshadow the multiplayer experience. Despite a few lackluster sports, the collection’s engaging games like Archery and Skateboarding make it a delightful addition to any game night.
