“Modern Warfare 4 made me feel something for the series again.”

The campaign’s 16 missions transport players across the globe and through time, alternating between the Korean invasion and Price’s hunt for the masterminds behind the plot. This structure allows for a dynamic blend of traditional military engagements and creative behind-enemy-lines operations. For instance, one mission sees Price navigating a New York nightclub in a John Wick-inspired action sequence, while another involves defending Seoul from paratroopers with mortar fire. The Korean missions, characterized by their intense, conventional warfare, surprisingly foster a deeper connection to the characters, particularly Young Mazino’s Park Hyun Jun. His role, much like Farah’s in the 2019 reboot, provides an emotional anchor amidst the military chaos.

The narrative also succeeds in adding nuance to the portrayal of the North Korean threat, avoiding the simplistic villainy often found in the series. The game’s standout mission, “Stranded,” exemplifies this nuanced storytelling. Players must navigate a vast snowy landscape, scavenging for resources to rebuild their arsenal, offering a taste of the game’s DMZ extraction mode. This mission allows for player freedom, encouraging exploration and experimentation with various approaches to achieve objectives.

“Its expansive behind-enemy-lines mission that borrows most of its ideas from the DMZ mode is a real highlight.”

Other memorable missions include a harrowing beach landing and an airfield escape that lets players switch characters on the fly, showcasing the series’ signature spectacle. These large-scale operations are intricately designed, delivering the quintessential “Call of Duty” experience. However, despite the campaign’s overall strength, it lacks a truly iconic mission to rival classics like “All Ghillied Up.”

While the campaign’s consistency is commendable, it occasionally falters during stealth segments or melee combat, where the controls feel less precise. These moments can detract from the narrative’s impact but are infrequent enough not to overshadow the overall experience. The game’s gunplay and movement mechanics remain top-notch, offering fluid transitions and tactical engagements that require strategy and precision.

Ultimately, “Modern Warfare 4” rekindles the franchise’s spirit with a robust campaign that balances old and new elements. By bidding farewell to familiar faces and introducing compelling new characters, it crafts a narrative that, while not reaching the heights of the series’ best, provides a satisfying conclusion to this chapter of Modern Warfare.
