End of Abyss Review

The game’s atmosphere, crafted by former Little Nightmares developers, is its most compelling feature, with dimly lit corridors and unsettling environments that evoke a sense of dread.

Initially, the horror elements and jump scares are effective, but they soon become predictable, with encounters feeling like routine procedures. Combat, while engaging, often falls into a pattern, with boss fights lacking the variety and innovation seen in other areas of the game. Players can choose from a range of weapons, including a Pulse Gun and a flamethrower, but the challenge of managing ammo is quickly diminished as crafting materials become overly abundant.

Exploration, a key aspect of any metroidvania, is hindered by a lack of rewarding discoveries and visual diversity. The facility’s interconnected hallways, meant to be a puzzle, instead frustrate with their uniform appearance and confusing shortcuts. The game’s Containment Sector, plagued by radiation, adds to the frustration as players must hunt for a radiation suit mod, a task that feels disconnected from the overarching narrative.

Despite these challenges, the audio design stands out, with sounds that enhance the game’s unsettling atmosphere. The reverberations and gurgles create a sense of scale and depth, making the facility feel vast and unending. However, even this strong audio work cannot fully compensate for the lack of cohesion between the game’s elements.

In the end, End of Abyss offers moments of brilliance but struggles to maintain a consistent and engaging experience. While it shows potential with its atmospheric design and horror elements, it falls short of the standards set by other genre titans. The game leaves players with glimpses of what could have been a standout title, but its disjointed execution prevents it from reaching those heights.
