Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown Review

“When Crimson Desert came out, I said that its content was a mile long and an inch deep, and for better or worse this DLC seems to say, ‘Here’s another half-mile.’”

Despite these shortcomings, the DLC excels in non-narrative content. The ship-crafting system, central to this expansion, introduces a variety of new resources, crewmates, and activities like harpooning fish and engaging in maritime battles. While I’ve only scratched the surface of these features, they promise to add depth to the seafaring experience, potentially offering hours of engaging gameplay.

The sense of wonder is rekindled as players glide underwater on a sea turtle or command a pirate crew, activities that seem surreal yet captivating within the context of Crimson Desert. These elements provide enough intrigue to keep players exploring, even if some of the new content falls short.

“Gliding underwater on the back of a sea turtle and captaining your own pirate crew truly just feel completely bizarre in the context of Crimson Desert.”

There are still numerous new features to explore, including base building, property management, and a combat arena-style gauntlet. The social links and romance mechanics for NPCs are particularly enticing, though I haven’t fully delved into them yet.

However, technical issues persist, with frequent bugs marring the experience. In my brief time with the DLC, I’ve encountered two hard crashes, bizarre character glitches, and distracting graphical problems during cutscenes. It’s uncertain if these will remain consistent issues, but they have been a significant hindrance so far.

Ultimately, Charting the Unknown requires more time to thoroughly assess. While some new activities feel insubstantial, the unexpected and engaging content could compensate for these deficiencies. As always with Crimson Desert, patience is key to discovering its full potential.
