“Fans of all ages [will have] a new way to experience ESPN’s first-ever Super Bowl production.”
Titled “Star Wars Funday Football,” this broadcast will be the first animated Super Bowl presentation. However, it follows a series of similar alternate broadcasts by ESPN, Disney, and the NFL. Previous iterations include the award-winning “Toy Story Funday Football” in 2023, “The Simpsons Funday Football” in 2024, and “Monsters Funday Football” in 2025.
The technology behind these broadcasts is provided by Sony’s Beyond Sports, which utilizes “data visualization technology” to transform real-time player movements into animated sequences. This approach delivers an engaging spectacle akin to a mobile game, capturing the essence of live sports in animated form.
Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Star Wars, “Star Wars Funday Football” will air just days before a newly restored version of the original 1977 film hits theaters on February 19, 2027.
“This production will feature beloved characters from the Lucasfilm franchise.”
