The Mongoose Review

“Liam Neeson continues his late-in-life action star antics with The Mongoose, a film that’s heavy on car chases and light on plot.”

Supporting roles by Ving Rhames, Marisa Tomei, and Michael Chiklis offer familiar faces, though their characters are somewhat underdeveloped. Rhames appears as Flanagan’s fellow soldier, while Tomei plays his ex-wife, Tara, who is caught in her own drama. Chiklis and Maurice Marvel Meredith portray law enforcement officials, embodying the clichéd roles of good cop and bad cop. Despite these limitations, the cast manages to deliver performances that keep the narrative moving.

The film attempts to tackle themes of military service and the personal battles veterans face post-deployment. As Flanagan races toward his dream of retiring in a serene Mexican beach, he must also confront the emotional scars left by his past. Director Mark Vanselow successfully weaves these elements into the storyline, offering a poignant conclusion that resonates emotionally, aided by a well-chosen soundtrack and clever editing in the final scenes.

“The film wants to say something about the men and women who have, and are, serving in the armed forces, and it actually succeeds in that regard eventually on an emotional level.”

While “The Mongoose” may not break new ground in the action genre, it does provide a mix of thrills and heartfelt moments. Neeson’s portrayal of a man caught between his past and a possible future gives the film its underlying charm. Although the movie feels like it could fit comfortably in the direct-to-video category, its blend of action and sentimentality makes it worth a watch—perhaps best enjoyed on a streaming platform.
