“We haven’t cast him as anything yet,” Gunn shared, subtly leaving the door open for future possibilities.
Ackles’ connection to Batman is well-established. He has voiced the character in several animated projects, including “Batman: The Long Halloween” and “Justice League: Warworld.” His portrayal of former Robin, Jason Todd, in “Batman: Under the Red Hood” further cements his ties to the DC universe. Although Ackles hasn’t donned the cape in a live-action setting, his previous roles certainly make it a conceivable transition.
While the idea of Ackles as Batman remains a fan favorite, the DCU has yet to introduce its own version of the Dark Knight. Upcoming projects like “Superman” in 2025 and “Lanterns” hint at a future inclusion of Batman, but for now, Gotham City is without its iconic protector. “The Brave and the Bold,” still in development, is expected to eventually introduce a new Batman to audiences.
In the meantime, Robert Pattinson will continue his portrayal of Bruce Wayne in “The Batman Part 2,” set to release next year. Despite changes at Warner Bros. and Paramount, Gunn and his co-CEO Peter Safran are expected to maintain their leadership roles within the DCU. The series “Lanterns” is concluding its first season, while “Man of Tomorrow,” a sequel to “Superman,” is slated for a July 2027 release.
Gunn clarified that no casting decision has been made: “Nice guy. We haven’t cast him as anything yet.”
