“Fjord features Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve giving layered, complicated performances, only for both of them to be left adrift in a film that never cuts as deep as it should.”

Directed by Cristian Mungiu, known for works like “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days” and “R.M.N.,” “Fjord” shines during its quieter moments. However, the film’s eventual pivot to a more conventional, broadly sketched storyline diminishes its impact. The plot thickens as a serious allegation leads to the children being taken by Child Protective Services, yet these pivotal characters remain underdeveloped, preventing audiences from fully engaging with their perspectives. The film critiques bureaucratic indifference, yet it fails to explore the richer intricacies of its characters, reducing them to mere caricatures.

As the narrative unfolds, “Fjord” integrates courtroom drama and critical revelations but lacks the cohesion and depth that could have made it truly compelling. By the film’s rushed conclusion, many threads remain unresolved, leaving viewers with more questions than answers. Compared to Mungiu’s previous works, this film feels like a missed opportunity, with its potential overshadowed by its inability to offer substantial insight into its characters or the cultural tensions it seeks to address.

“In the end, you feel like you’ve come to know shockingly little about the characters or what drives them, a fatal flaw for a work supposedly about trying to understand others.”

While “Fjord” attempts to maintain an impartial, observational stance, it ultimately falters in providing a meaningful exploration of its themes. The film’s ambivalence toward the complexities of its narrative may be an effort to remain evenhanded, yet it inadvertently skews the balance, leaving audiences with a sense of detachment. The questions it raises about truth, understanding, and the motivations behind the characters’ actions remain largely unanswered.

Despite its shortcomings, “Fjord” will likely spark discussions about its political angles and what it attempts to convey. However, the lack of depth and emotional engagement makes it difficult to fully grasp its intended message. Mungiu’s ambition to craft a narrative that reflects the chaos of real-world cultural conflicts is clear, but without deeper character exploration, the film ultimately falls short of delivering the clarity and insight it strives for.
