The Cat in the Hat offers a delightful mix of humor, blending slapstick comedy for children with witty, multilayered jokes that resonate with adults.
Bill Hader’s portrayal of the Cat is a highlight, his comedic timing and vocal versatility adding depth to the character. Matt Berry, as the voice of Waffles, the talking fish, provides additional comic relief. Berry’s distinct voice enhances the humor, especially when Waffles reacts to the chaos around him.
The plot thickens as the Cat accidentally loses a device akin to Doctor Strange’s Time Stone, leading to an adventurous quest with Gabby and Sebastian. Their journey takes them through enchanted moving boxes filled with lively toys and illustrations, reminiscent of “Inside Out” but with unique creative elements, like musical instruments and animated IKEA instructions that bring the adventure to life.
Despite its charm, the film struggles with pacing issues, particularly in the third act. At nearly two hours, it introduces too many overlapping conflicts, including the Cat’s lost device, a monstrous creature named “Something,” and a subplot involving the family’s nosy landlord. These elements, while entertaining, could have been streamlined to maintain the film’s momentum.
Despite its lengthy runtime, The Cat in the Hat remains a joyous experience, thanks to its endearing characters and clever humor.
The movie shines with its imaginative use of Thing 1 and Thing 2, expanding them into a larger group that injects chaotic energy into the story. This expansion cleverly hints at potential franchise opportunities, akin to the Minions phenomenon, while maintaining a self-aware humor that acknowledges this with a playful wink.
Ultimately, this animated “The Cat in the Hat” surpasses its predecessor by delivering a humorous and heartfelt interpretation of Dr. Seuss’s beloved tale. Although trimming some subplots could have elevated it to greatness, the film still stands as an entertaining and inventive adaptation, showcasing the Cat’s magical world in a fresh and engaging way.
