Andy Weir Says He May Be Among Last Fully Human Writers

“In the end, if I give you a hammer, you can build a house or you can murder someone. It’s not the tool that’s the issue; it’s the user.”

Weir is currently weaving AI into his upcoming novel, aiming to explore the theme in a distinctive manner. In a 2024 interview with The Bridge, he revealed, “AI plays a significant role in it. But I’m doing it my way, not writing a story about robots falling in love or anything.”

The conversation around AI’s role in creative industries extends beyond literature. In the gaming world, Anthropic recently blocked AI-generated game clones in an update to Claude Opus. Meanwhile, Masahiro Sakurai, creator of Super Smash Bros., has expressed skepticism about AI’s ability to rival human-made games.

“Writing a story that involves AI is kind of in my wheelhouse because I know how computers work.”

Rachel Weber, Head of Editorial Development at IGN, has been observing these shifts. A veteran in the gaming industry, Weber continues to explore the intersection of technology and creativity, a testament to the evolving landscape authors like Weir are navigating.
