GTA IV’s Liberty City wasn’t just one of the most convincing virtual cities of its generation; it’s still a more credible and convincing city than those in most of the open-world action games I’ve played since.

Rockstar’s dedication to realism extended beyond the environment to the physical interactions within it. The introduction of NaturalMotion’s Euphoria technology revolutionized character animation, allowing NPCs and Niko to respond dynamically to their surroundings. This innovation created unpredictable and often humorous interactions, enhancing the game’s replay value and setting a new standard for realism in gaming.

While GTA IV was critically acclaimed, it also sparked division among fans. Its slower, more grounded narrative and the relationship system, which required players to engage in repetitive social activities, were not universally loved. The driving physics, characterized by a weighty feel, also polarized players, though some appreciated the realistic handling of different vehicle types.

Sentimentally speaking, Grand Theft Auto IV isn’t my favourite of the series – but I would say it’s the one I respect the most.

The game’s soundtrack, initially seen as less impactful compared to its predecessors, improved with the release of its DLCs, “The Lost and Damned” and “The Ballad of Gay Tony.” These expansions not only enriched the musical landscape but also showcased Rockstar’s ability to enhance a game’s universe post-launch.

In summary, while Grand Theft Auto IV may not be my personal favorite, it earns immense respect for its bold shift towards a more realistic and immersive game world. It laid the groundwork for the modern Grand Theft Auto experience, proving that even in a smaller setting, a game can achieve remarkable depth and authenticity.
