Λίγες εβδομάδες πριν από την πλήρη τετραετία από τότε που η Nothing κυκλοφόρησε το πρώτο της προϊόν: τα Ear 1 true wireless ακουστικά. Τώρα, η Nothing κάνει ένα τεράστιο άλμα στον χώρο του ήχου, ρίχνοντας το καπέλο της στην αγορά των ακουστικών πάνω από το κεφάλι. Σε μια ολοένα και πιο ανταγωνιστική αγορά, τα Nothing Headphone 1 ξεχωρίζουν προσφέροντας μοναδικό σχεδιασμό και χαρακτηριστικά μελλοντικής απόδειξης σε λογική τιμή των $299. Είχα την ευκαιρία να τα δοκιμάσω πριν από την κυκλοφορία τους και είμαι αρκετά εντυπωσιασμένος από ό,τι έχει επιτύχει η ανερχόμενη μάρκα με έδρα το Λονδίνο εδώ.
Ενώ τα Headphone 1 θυμίζουν γενικά το σχήμα των Apple AirPods Max, η Nothing φέρνει λειτουργικότητα ανεξάρτητη από το λειτουργικό σύστημα και τεχνολογία κορυφαίας κατηγορίας στους θαυμαστές των iOS και Android.
Οι πρώτες εντυπώσεις είναι τα πάντα, και τα Headphone (1) ακολουθούν την αληθινή μόδα της Nothing με εντυπωσιακά διαφανή στοιχεία. Το υπόλοιπο κατασκευαστικό μέρος είναι αισθητικά ευχάριστο και αποτελείται από αλουμινένια εξαρτήματα και ανθεκτικά πλαστικά υλικά. Η πρώτη μου σκέψη ήταν ότι οι εξωτερικοί σχεδιασμοί των κυπέλλων μοιάζουν με δύο Sony Walkman WM-4 δεμένα στα αυτιά σας, αλλά υπόσχονται και παρέχουν σύγχρονη λειτουργικότητα. Η εταιρεία δεν τσιγκουνεύτηκε ούτε στα υλικά υψηλής ποιότητας, τοποθετώντας δυναμικούς οδηγούς 40mm σε κάθε ακουστικό με περιβάλλοντα από πολυουρεθάνη 8.9mm. Όπως και τα εξαιρετικά Nothing Ear buds του 2024, τα ακουστικά κυκλοφορούν σε ελκυστικές χρωματικές εκδόσεις Μαύρο και Λευκό.
Σε αντίθεση με πολλούς από τους ανταγωνιστές τους, τα Nothing Headphone 1 επιλέγουν απτικά κουμπιά αντί για ελέγχους αφής. Αν και αυτό μπορεί ακούσια να αλλάξει την εφαρμογή και να επηρεάσει την ενεργή ακύρωση θορύβου (ANC) και την ποιότητα ήχου κατά τη χρήση, μου αρέσει σε αυτή την περίπτωση. Παρά τα μακριά μαλλιά μου, διαπίστωσα ότι μπορούσα να εκτελέσω τις περισσότερες εντολές χωρίς ιδιαίτερο πρόβλημα. Το μόνο πρόβλημα που αντιμετώπισα κατά την περίοδο ανασκόπησης ήταν με τον κύλινδρο στο δεξί ακουστικό. Σε ιδανικές συνθήκες, αυτό μπορεί να πατηθεί για να αναπαράγει ή να παύσει τη μουσική, να κρατηθεί για να ενεργοποιήσει το ANC ή τη λειτουργία διαφάνειας, ή να κυλιστεί οριζόντια για να ρυθμίσει την ένταση. Ωστόσο, ο κύλινδρος φαίνεται να δυσκολεύεται να καταγράψει τις κινήσεις ρύθμισης έντασης όταν τα μαλλιά παρεμβάλλονται, κάτι που είναι λίγο ενοχλητικό.
Τα ακουστικά διαθέτουν έναν έξυπνο έλεγχο με πτερύγιο για παράκαμψη κομματιών και για απάντηση ή τερματισμό κλήσεων. Αν θέλετε να επαναλάβετε ένα πιασάρικο ριφ, μπορείτε να κρατήσετε το πτερύγιο προς οποιαδήποτε κατεύθυνση για να προχωρήσετε ή να επαναφέρετε τραγούδια κατά 10 δευτερόλεπτα. Ωστόσο, αυτή η λειτουργία δεν υποστηρίζεται παντού — για παράδειγμα, δεν κατάφερα να την κάνω να λειτουργήσει στο Spotify, αλλά τη χρησιμοποίησα επιτυχώς με τον ενσωματωμένο media player του smartphone μου.
Εκτός από τον κύλινδρο και το πτερύγιο, τα Nothing Headphone 1 διαθέτουν ένα μικρό κυκλικό πολυλειτουργικό κουμπί. Αυτό μπορεί να προσαρμοστεί στην εφαρμογή Nothing X για να ενεργοποιήσει τον φωνητικό βοηθό του τηλεφώνου σας, να πλοηγηθεί στις λειτουργίες ANC, να ενεργοποιήσει τον χωρικό ήχο και άλλα. Οι λάτρεις της παραμετροποίησης μπορούν ακόμη και να αναθέσουν μια δεύτερη λειτουργία που εκτελείται πατώντας και κρατώντας το κουμπί, επιτρέποντας εύκολο έλεγχο δύο μοναδικών λειτουργιών εν κινήσει.
Οι κάτοχοι τηλεφώνων Nothing μπορούν να αναθέσουν το κουμπί για να ενεργοποιήσουν το κέντρο οργάνωσης Essential Space με AI της εταιρείας. Αυτό σας επιτρέπει να καταγράφετε φωνητικές σημειώσεις, υπενθυμίσεις και φευγαλέες σκέψεις χωρίς να χρειάζεται να πλοηγηθείτε στο τηλέφωνό σας. Ομοίως, το πολυλειτουργικό κουμπί μπορεί να ανατεθεί στη νέα λειτουργία Channel Hop της Nothing, η οποία εναλλάσσεται μεταξύ πρόσφατων εφαρμογών ήχου και άλλων αγαπημένων λειτουργιών απευθείας από τα ακουστικά. Ωστόσο, η τελευταία λειτουργεί μόνο με το νεοανακοινωθέν Nothing Phone 3, κάτι που αποτελεί αρκετά αυστηρό περιορισμό για τους μακροχρόνιους θαυμαστές της Nothing.
Είμαι ενθουσιασμένος να σας πω ότι, σε αντίθεση με τα περισσότερα καταναλωτικά ακουστικά πάνω από το κεφάλι, τα Nothing Headphone 1 διαθέτουν βαθμολογία αντοχής στο νερό και τη σκόνη IP52. Αυτό είναι καλά νέα για τους λάτρεις του γυμναστηρίου, καθώς τα εξαρτήματα των ακουστικών είναι προστατευμένα από μικρά στερεά αντικείμενα και στάξιμο νερού με μέγιστη κλίση 15 μοιρών. Η Nothing φαίνεται να έχει υποβάλει τα ακουστικά σε πάνω από 50 αυστηρές δοκιμές αξιοπιστίας για πτώσεις, στρέψεις, ιδρώτα και ακραίες θερμοκρασίες. Αυτό τα τοποθετεί μπροστά από ηγέτες της βιομηχανίας όπως τα Sony WH-1000XM6, επιτρέποντας στους θαυμαστές να τα εμπιστεύονται ως αξιόπιστο σύντροφο κατά τη διάρκεια ιδρωμένων προγραμμάτων προπόνησης.
Η επένδυση των ακουστικών διαθέτει αφρό μνήμης πολυουρεθάνης που προσαρμόζεται σε διαφορετικά σχήματα κεφαλής. Αν και είναι κάπως πιο σφιχτή από μερικούς ανταγωνιστές από το κουτί, η επένδυση θα πρέπει να χαλαρώσει με την πάροδο του χρόνου. Ομοίως, παρά τον τρέχοντα καταπιεστικό καύσωνα στη Βρετανία, μόνο ελαφριά συσσώρευση θερμότητας παρατηρήθηκε κατά τη διάρκεια των δοκιμών. Η Nothing ισχυρίζεται ότι τα μαξιλάρια των αυτιών είναι ανθεκτικά στο λάδι και το μακιγιάζ, κάτι που είναι καλά νέα αν σκοπεύετε να τα φορέσετε στο Met Gala. Απλά να έχετε υπόψη ότι το να είναι ανθεκτικά στο λάδι δεν σημαίνει ότι δεν θα λεκιάσουν ή δεν θα χρειαστούν καθαρισμό κατά καιρούς.
Όσον αφορά τη διάρκεια ζωής της μπαταρίας, σύμφωνα με τη Nothing, τα ακουστικά θα πρέπει να διαρκούν 35 ώρες με ενεργοποιημένο το ANC και έως 80 ώρες χωρίς αυτό. Ο αδελφικός μας ιστότοπος, SoundGuys, εργάζεται σκληρά πάνω σε μια αξιολόγηση που θα περιέχει όλες τις αντικειμενικές μετρήσεις που θα χρειαστείτε ποτέ, αλλά μπορώ να σας πω ότι οι ισχυρισμοί της Nothing ταιριάζουν λίγο-πολύ με την εμπειρία μου μετά από μια εβδομάδα δοκιμών. Αν αυτό διατηρηθεί μακροπρόθεσμα, μπορούμε να αναμένουμε ότι τα ακουστικά θα ξεπεράσουν τα Sony WH-1000XM5, Bose QuietComfort Ultra και Apple AirPods Max. Για σύγκριση, αυτά τα ακουστικά απολαμβάνουν περίπου 32 ώρες, 27 ώρες και 20 ώρες αναπαραγωγής με ενεργοποιημένο το ANC, αντίστοιχα.
Λιγότεροι κύκλοι φόρτισης γενικά σημαίνουν καλή μακροπρόθεσμη υγεία της μπαταρίας και πιο αργή υποβάθμιση. Ωστόσο, η απόδοσή σας θα εξαρτηθεί από το αν ακούτε μέσω των κωδικοποιητών Bluetooth SBC, AAC ή LDAC. Ο τελευταίος είναι ο πιο ενεργοβόρος, πράγμα που σημαίνει ότι μπορεί να λάβετε μόνο 30 ώρες αναπαραγωγής με ενεργοποιημένο το ANC και 54 ώρες χωρίς ANC. Παρόλα αυτά, όσοι βρίσκονται σε δύσκολη θέση μπορούν να φορτίσουν γρήγορα τα ακουστικά της Nothing για πέντε λεπτά και να λάβουν περίπου δύο ώρες και 24 λεπτά φόρτισης. Υποστηρίζεται επίσης αυτόματη αναπαραγωγή/παύση, οπότε δεν χρειάζεται να ανησυχείτε ότι τα ακουστικά θα συνεχίσουν να παίζουν τη λίστα σας όταν τα ακουμπάτε.
Ήμουν ιδιαίτερα ενθουσιασμένος που έμαθα ότι η Nothing εξόπλισε τα Headphone 1 με πολλές επιθυμητές λειτουργίες. Για παράδειγμα, τα ακουστικά υποστηρίζουν ήχο USB-C και διαθέτουν θύρα 3.5mm. Το πρώτο είναι πιο ωφέλιμο, δεδομένου ότι τα smartphones με υποδοχές ακουστικών είναι σχεδόν ανύπαρκτα εκτός από ορισμένα οικονομικά τηλέφωνα. Μην ανησυχείτε αν δεν έχετε προμηθευτεί καλώδια, καθώς η Nothing περιλαμβάνει ένα λογικά μακρύ καλώδιο USB-C και aux στη συσκευασία. Όσοι είναι επιρρεπείς στο να γρατζουνάνε τα αντικείμενά τους κατά τη μεταφορά θα εκτιμήσουν επίσης τη θήκη μεταφοράς 264g με μαλακό κέλυφος των ακουστικών.
Η λήψη της εφαρμογής Nothing X είναι απαραίτητη για να αξιοποιήσετε στο έπακρο τα ακουστικά. Για παράδειγμα, μπορείτε να εναλλάσσετε μεταξύ των λειτουργιών ANC Χαμηλού, Μεσαίου, Υψηλού και Προσαρμοστικού. Ειλικρινά, δεν άκουσα καμία απτή διαφορά μεταξύ των λειτουργιών, αλλά ίσως αυτό θα βελτιωθεί σε μια μελλοντική ενημέρωση λογισμικού. Παρόλα αυτά, το ANC των ακουστικών καταπνίγει μια εξαιρετική ποσότητα θορύβου. Φορούσα τα ακουστικά ενώ έβραζα το βραστήρα και εξεπλάγην που μπορούσα να τον ακούσω ελάχιστα. Οι συνομιλίες και ο θόρυβος από τα πιάτα ακούγονται περισσότερο, αλλά όχι τόσο ώστε να επηρεάζουν τη μουσική σας. Η λειτουργία διαφάνειας της Nothing επίσης κάνει εξαιρετική δουλειά στην ενίσχυση των εξωτερικών ήχων χωρίς να είναι ενοχλητική. Απλά προσπαθήστε να μην τρομάξετε όταν ακούσετε για πρώτη φορά το ήχο ειδοποίησης.
Τα Nothing Headphone 1 διαθέτουν επίσης εγγενή χωρικό ήχο με παρακολούθηση κεφαλής. Αυτό μετατρέπει οποιαδήποτε στερεοφωνική μίξη σε τρισδιάστατο ηχοτοπίο χωρίς να είναι απαραίτητα μιξαρισμένη για Dolby Atmos. Ενώ η εφαρμογή του για ακρόαση μουσικής είναι αμφισβητή, το απόλαυσα ιδιαίτερα κατά τη ροή σειρών στο Netflix. Δεν παρατήρησα κανένα πρόβλημα καθυστέρησης, και ακόμη κι έτσι, η εφαρμογή Nothing X υποστηρίζει λειτουργία χαμηλής καθυστέρησης αν χρειάζεστε βελτιωμένη απόδοση κατά το gaming.
Οι ακροατές μπορούν να ρυθμίσουν τα ακουστικά εύκολα χάρη στην υποστήριξη Google Fast Pair και Microsoft Swift Pair. Ομοίως, όσοι αλλάζουν συχνά συσκευές μπορούν να χρησιμοποιήσουν τη λειτουργία Διπλής Σύνδεσης της Nothing. Αυτό σας επιτρέπει να συνδέσετε έως δύο συσκευές με τα Headphone (1) ταυτόχρονα. Μόλις ρυθμιστεί, μπορείτε να ακούτε μουσική στον φορητό σας υπολογιστή και να απαντάτε κλήσεις από το τηλέφωνό σας χωρίς διακοπή. Αν είστε αδέξιος σαν εμένα, μπορείτε επίσης να χρησιμοποιήσετε τη λειτουργία Εύρεση της Nothing για να εντοπίσετε τα ακουστικά. Απλά προσέξτε να μην δοκιμάσετε αυτή τη λειτουργία ενώ φοράτε τα ακουστικά — είναι δυνατή!
Η εφαρμογή Nothing X φιλοξενεί τέσσερις προεπιλογές EQ για να βελτιώσετε τον ήχο σας. Αυτές περιλαμβάνουν τις Balanced, More Bass, More Treble, και Voice. Εγώ βασίστηκα πολύ στην πρώτη, αν και η τελευταία είναι χρήσιμη αν ακούτε συχνά podcasts ή ομιλίες. Μπορείτε επίσης να προσαρμόσετε τη δική σας απλή προεπιλογή EQ σύροντας τρία σημεία σε έναν κυκλικό οπτικοποιητή για να ρυθμίσετε τα Bass, Mid, ή Treble. Η μείωση συνήθως λειτουργεί καλύτερα, καθώς είναι λιγότερο πιθανό να προκαλέσετε παραμόρφωση με την υπερενίσχυση μιας συγκεκριμένης ζώνης συχνοτήτων. Παρατήρησα ότι η υπερβολική ενίσχυση μιας ζώνης συχνοτήτων έκανε τις άλλες δύο να ακούγονται σημαντικά πιο αθόρυβες.
Οι λάτρεις του ήχου και οι ηχητικοί ερευνητές θα απολαύσουν το αναβαθμισμένο 8-band custom EQ της Nothing. Κάθε ζώνη μπορεί να ρυθμιστεί κατά +/- 6dB, και το EQ διαθέτει νέους οριζόντιους ρυθμιστές για λεπτομερή ρύθμιση της συχνότητας και του συντελεστή ποιότητας κάθε ζώνης. Ο τελευταίος ελέγχει το εύρος ζώνης, το οποίο είναι χρήσιμο αν θέλετε να ρυθμίσετε μια ευρεία γκάμα συχνοτήτων με την ίδια ζώνη. Υπάρχει ακόμη και ένας ξεχωριστός ενισχυτής μπάσων 5 επιπέδων, αν αυτό σας ενδιαφέρει. Οι θαυμαστές μπορούν να εισάγουν ένα προετοιμασμένο προφίλ EQ σκανάροντας έναν κωδικό QR ή ανεβάζοντας ένα από τη μνήμη της συσκευής τους. Ομοίως, μπορείτε να μοιραστείτε τις πιο περήφανες, πιο λεπτομερώς ρυθμισμένες ρυθμίσεις EQ σας με άλλους δημιουργώντας μία από τις εννέα εικόνες κωδικού QR ειδικών για το είδος.
Οι συχνοί χρήστες του Zoom θα χαρούν να μάθουν ότι τα Nothing Headphone 1 έχουν καλή ποιότητα κλήσεων. Αν και δεν συγκρίνονται με ειδικά μικρόφωνα συμπυκνωτή, οι φωνές είναι κατανοητές στις περισσότερες περιπτώσεις. Χρησιμοποιώντας ξανά τον βραστήρα μου, έβαλα τον σύντροφό μου να με καλέσει φορώντας τα ακουστικά και φτιάχνοντας τσάι. Όπως και πριν, τα ακουστικά έκαναν εξαιρετική δουλειά απορρίπτοντας το χαμηλό βουητό του βραστήρα ενώ διατηρούσαν τη φωνή. Τα αποτελέσματα ήταν παρόμοια ακόμη και όταν έκανα κλήσεις σε μια ανεμώδη μέρα και ενώ χτυπούσα το πληκτρολόγιο του υπολογιστή. Ωστόσο, ενώ τα ακουστικά μειώνουν τους ήχους του πληκτρολογίου όταν δεν υπάρχει ομιλία, μπορεί να ακούσετε κάποιους ήχους όταν συνομιλείτε. Συνολικά, η Nothing ισχυρίζεται ότι τα ακουστικά παρέχουν 37 ώρες χρόνου ομιλίας με ενεργοποιημένο το ANC, ή 53 ώρες χωρίς ANC.
Μέχρι στιγμής όλα καλά, αλλά με πονάει να αναφέρω μερικές αδυναμίες, ξεκινώντας από την μεγαλύτερη μου ενόχληση: τα Nothing Headphone 1 δεν είναι τόσο άνετα όσο θα ήθελα. Για αρχή, ζυγίζουν πολύ βαριά 329 γραμμάρια. Αυτό είναι περίπου 80 γραμμάρια βαρύτερα από πολλούς κορυφαίους ανταγωνιστές, συμπεριλαμβανομένων των Sony WH-1000XM5, XM6 και Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. Σίγουρα, τα προαναφερθέντα Apple AirPods Max ζυγίζουν περισσότερο, αλλά αυτό δεν λέει πολλά. Τα ακουστικά της Apple έχουν ένα υφασμάτινο στήριγμα κεφαλής με μεγάλη επιφάνεια, διανέμοντας το βάρος πιο ομοιόμορφα στο κεφάλι. Το ίδιο δεν μπορεί να ειπωθεί για τα ακουστικά της Nothing.
Δυστυχώς, βρήκα ότι οι συνεδρίες ακρόασης μου διακόπτονταν από την ελάχιστη επένδυση του στήριγματος κεφαλής. Ενώ στην αρχή είναι καλά, το κρανίο μου αρχίζει να εμφανίζει πόνο γύρω στο δίωρο. Η ολίσθηση των τηλεσκοπικών βραχιόνων για πιο χαλαρή εφαρμογή βοηθά κάπως στην ανακούφιση της πίεσης, αλλά αυτό συμβιβάζει τη σφράγιση γύρω από το αυτί. Μιλώντας για αυτό, τα Nothing Headphone 1 έχουν αισθητά ισχυρή δύναμη σύσφιξης σε σύγκριση με τον ανταγωνισμό. Αν και αυτό είναι χρήσιμο για την επίτευξη εξαιρετικής απόδοσης ANC, μπορεί επίσης να προκαλέσει κόπωση στα αυτιά. Αυτό ήταν ιδιαίτερα έντονο για μένα, καθώς τα ακουστικά είναι μόλις αρκετά φαρδιά για να χωρέσουν τα αυτιά μου. Οποιοσδήποτε με μεγαλύτερο κεφάλι ή αυτιά από τα δικά μου μπορεί να δυσκολευτεί να επιτύχει καλή εφαρμογή με αυτά τα ακουστικά.
Ενώ είμαι ευγνώμων που τα ακουστικά έρχονται με θήκη μεταφοράς, είναι κρίμα που δεν έχουν πτυσσόμενους μεντεσέδες. Αυτό θα είχε προσφέρει μικρότερο μέγεθος και θα τα έκανε πολύ πιο εύκολα να αποθηκευτούν σε ένα σακίδιο. Το σχήμα των ακουστικών, που είναι ορθογώνιο με στρογγυλεμένες γωνίες, σημαίνει επίσης ότι συχνά συγκρούονται μεταξύ τους κατά τη μεταφορά. Αν και δεν τα έχω γρατζουνίσει ακόμα, δεν θα με εξέπληττε να παρατηρήσω μερικές γρατζουνιές στις γωνίες με επαναλαμβανόμενη χρήση. Το κουμπί σύζευξης Bluetooth είναι επίσης αρκετά εύκολο να το χάσετε, δεδομένης της δυσδιάκριτης θέσης του στο εσωτερικό του δεξιού ακουστικού.
Η σταθερή ποιότητα ήχου των ακουστικών συνοδεύεται επίσης από μια μικρή επιφύλαξη. Συνολικά, τα ακουστικά έχουν μια ευχάριστη απόκριση συχνότητας από το κουτί, και η διαθέσιμη προσαρμογή είναι επαρκής. Ωστόσο, τα ακουστικά υπερτονίζουν σημαντικά την απόκριση των μπάσων όταν είναι ενεργοποιημένο το ANC. Ενώ αυτό μπορεί να διορθωθεί σε μια μελλοντική ενημέρωση λογισμικού, προς το παρόν, απαιτείται κάποια ανεπιθύμητη λεπτομερής ρύθμιση με το EQ όταν αλλάζετε μεταξύ των λειτουργιών ANC.
Τα Nothing Headphone 1 είναι μια λογικά τιμολογημένη και πλούσια σε χαρακτηριστικά εναλλακτική λύση σε αντίπαλες κορυφαίες μάρκες. Για $299, είναι ένα ελκυστικό και μοναδικά στυλάτο ζευγάρι ακουστικών για όσους θέλουν πρακτική τεχνολογία όπως ήχο USB-C, Bluetooth 5.3 και βαθμολογία IP52. Η εφαρμογή Nothing X είναι επίσης ολοκληρωμένη, και οι εξαιρετικές λειτουργίες ακύρωσης θορύβου και ενσωματωμένων χωρικών χαρακτηριστικών αξίζουν την τιμή. Οι περιβαλλοντικά συνειδητοποιημένοι θα εκτιμήσουν επίσης τους ισχυρισμούς της Nothing ότι τα ακουστικά είναι φιλικά προς το Amazon Climate Pledge. Ομοίως, φέρεται να χρησιμοποιούν 100% ανανεώσιμη ενέργεια στην τελική συναρμολόγηση, κάτι που είναι μια ωραία πινελιά.
Ωστόσο, υπάρχουν κάποιες αμφισβητήσιμες σχεδιαστικές επιλογές που είναι λιγότερο πρόβλημα με τα αντίπαλα ακουστικά. Ο βαρύς σχεδιασμός και η κακή κατανομή βάρους σημαίνουν ότι τα ακουστικά είναι δύσκολο να προταθούν αν θέλετε ανώτερη άνεση. Ομοίως, όσοι έχουν μεγαλύτερο κεφάλι και αυτιά μπορεί να δυσκολευτούν με την ελάχιστη επένδυση του στήριγματος κεφαλής και το μικρό μέγεθος των ακουστικών.
Όποιος έχει λίγα επιπλέον χρήματα και θέλει ανώτερη άνεση θα πρέπει να εξετάσει τα Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones ($429 στο Amazon). For example, you can cycle through the Low, Mid, High, and Adaptive ANC modes. Truthfully, I didn’t hear any tangible difference between each of the modes, but perhaps this will be refined in a future firmware update. Nevertheless, the headphones’ ANC quells an exceptional amount of noise. I wore the cans while boiling the kettle and was surprised to find I could barely hear it. Conversation and clattering dishware cuts through more, but not so much as to infiltrate your mix when listening to music. Nothing’s transparency mode also does an excellent job of amplifying external sounds without being shrill. Just try not to jump when you first hear the breathy sound prompt. The Nothing Headphone 1 enjoy built-in spatial features for movie fans and gamers. The Nothing Headphone 1 also feature native spatial audio with head-tracking. This transforms any stereo mix into a three-dimensional soundscape without necessarily being mixed for Dolby Atmos. While its application for listening to music is questionable, I enjoyed it immensely while streaming shows on Netflix. I didn’t notice any latency issues, and even so, the Nothing X app supports Low lag mode if you need improved performance during gaming.Listeners can get set up in a cinch thanks to Google Fast Pair and Microsoft Swift Pair support. Likewise, those who frequently switch between devices can use Nothing’s Dual Connection feature. This lets you connect up to two devices with the Headphone (1) simultaneously. Once set up, you can listen to music on your laptop and answer calls from your phone seamlessly. If you’re a klutz like me, you can also use Nothing’s Find My feature to locate the headphones. Frequent Zoom callers will be pleased to know that the Nothing Headphone 1 have decent call quality. While they don’t hold a candle to dedicated condenser microphones, voices are intelligible in most cases. Using my kettle again, I roped my partner into calling me whilst wearing the headphones and making a cup of tea. Like before, the cans did an excellent job of rejecting the kettle’s low rumble while retaining the voice. The results were similar even when taking calls out on a breezy day and while tapping a computer keyboard. However, while the headphones quieten keyboard clicks when there is no speech, you may hear some taps when conversing. Overall, Nothing claims the headphones provide 37 hours of ANC-enabled talk time, or 53 hours without ANC. Plush features, minimal paddingTom Triggs / Android AuthorityThe headband isn't plush enough to support super-long listening sessions.So far so great, but it pains me to call out a few stumbles, starting with my biggest gripe: the Nothing Headphone 1 just aren’t as comfortable as I’d have liked. For starters, they weigh a very hefty 329g. That’s roughly 80g heavier than many top competitors, including the Sony WH-1000XM5, XM6, and Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. Sure, the aforementioned Apple AirPods Max weigh more, but that’s not saying much. Apple’s over-ear headphones have a fabric headband with a large surface area, distributing the weight more evenly across the head. The same cannot be said for Nothing’s headphones.Unfortunately, I found my listening sessions cut short by the minimal padding of the headband. While fine at first, my scalp would begin to exhibit some pain around the two-hour mark. Sliding the telescopic arms for a looser fit helps somewhat in alleviating pressure, but this compromises the seal around the ear. Speaking of which, the Nothing Headphone 1 have a noticeably tight clamping force compared to the competition. While this is useful for achieving excellent ANC performance, it can also cause ear fatigue. This was particularly acute for me, as the ear cups are only just wide enough to accommodate my ears. Anyone with a larger head or ears than mine may struggle to achieve a good fit with these cans. Those with a larger head and ears may struggle to achieve a comfortable fit. While I’m thankful that the headphones come equipped with a carry case, it’s a shame they forgo foldable hinges. This would have awarded a smaller form factor and made them much easier to stow in a backpack. The rounded-rectangle shape of the ear cups also means they often collide with one another in transit. While I haven’t scuffed them yet, it wouldn’t surprise me to notice a few dings on the corners with repeated use. The Bluetooth pairing button is also fairly easy to miss, given its inconspicuous location on the inside of the right ear cup.The headphones’ solid sound quality also comes with one minor caveat. Nothing has seemingly put the cans through their paces with over 50 rigorous reliability tests for drops, twists, sweat, and extreme temperatures. Speaking of which, the Nothing Headphone 1 have a noticeably tight clamping force compared to the competition. While this is useful for achieving excellent ANC performance, it can also cause ear fatigue. This was particularly acute for me, as the ear cups are only just wide enough to accommodate my ears. Anyone with a larger head or ears than mine may struggle to achieve a good fit with these cans. Those with a larger head and ears may struggle to achieve a comfortable fit. While I’m thankful that the headphones come equipped with a carry case, it’s a shame they forgo foldable hinges. This would have awarded a smaller form factor and made them much easier to stow in a backpack. The rounded-rectangle shape of the ear cups also means they often collide with one another in transit. While I haven’t scuffed them yet, it wouldn’t surprise me to notice a few dings on the corners with repeated use. The Bluetooth pairing button is also fairly easy to miss, given its inconspicuous location on the inside of the right ear cup.The headphones’ solid sound quality also comes with one minor caveat. Overall, the cans have a pleasing frequency response out of the box, and the available customization is ample. However, the headphones significantly over-emphasize the bass response when ANC is enabled. While this may be rectified in a future firmware update, at present, it requires some rather unwanted fine-tuning with the EQ when switching between ANC modes. The Nothing Headphone 1 bring high-end features and a unique design that's best suited for those with smaller heads. Anyone with a bit of extra cash who wants superior comfort should consider the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones ($429 at Amazon). In addition to more supple padding and foldable hinges, Bose’s cans support Snapdragon Sound with aptX Lossless and have excellent noise canceling.Meanwhile, price-conscious listeners will appreciate the JLab JBuds Lux ANC ($79.99 at Amazon). These use ear cups with wide openings at the top to accommodate real ear shapes and have a breathable fabric headband. They also support USB-C audio and enjoy decent sound quality. Those invested in the Nothing ecosystem who want to forgo over-ears altogether should grab the Nothing Ear ($149 at Amazon). While their ANC performance isn’t the best, they are comfortable for long listening sessions, have excellent sound quality, and support the LDAC and LHDC Bluetooth codecs.
