The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Review

This remake proves there’s still so much value in the traditional Zelda formula: the dense, intimate world of Hyrule is stuffed with charming characters and fascinating secrets.

From the moment players step into Kokiri Forest, the game’s visual and auditory splendor captivates. The environments—from quaint villages to eerie dungeons—are imbued with rich details, creating an immersive experience. The game maintains a steady 60 fps, enhancing the fluidity of gameplay, whether docked or in handheld mode. The soundtrack, a beautifully orchestrated rendition of Koji Kondo’s original score, complements the vivid world, with sound effects that bring Hyrule to life.

Link’s journey is filled with charming animations and reactive design elements borrowed from Breath of the Wild. His interactions with the environment, such as overheating in Death Mountain Crater, showcase modern advancements in game design. The narrative presentation is more engaging, with key moments beautifully framed and characters brought to life through expressive animations and voice acting. The controls mirror the intuitive mechanics of Breath of the Wild, allowing for precise movement and immersive combat. Link’s arsenal, now enhanced with motion aiming, makes traditional weapons like the slingshot more effective and enjoyable.

Combat remains a crucial component, with Link’s swordplay requiring strategic timing and enemy behavior understanding. Each foe presents a unique challenge, though the game’s difficulty could benefit from a more challenging mode akin to Hero Mode in other Zelda remakes. The introduction of Business Scrub Seeds, which provide easy access to supplies, further reduces the game’s challenge, leaving seasoned players wanting more.

Hyrule’s world retains its old-school charm, with a compact layout that encourages revisiting areas once new abilities are acquired. The interplay of exploration and discovery remains central, guided by minimal hints and a quest log that encourages players to uncover their path. Conversations with townsfolk lead to main and side quests, enriching the narrative and offering humorous and memorable moments.

Hyrule is filled with secrets that exist just to be secrets. Certain ocarina songs trigger interactions that have no purpose other than playfulness.

The game’s dungeons, a hallmark of the Zelda series, offer intricate puzzles and battles. Although some changes streamline the experience, potentially reducing the satisfaction of solving them, the dungeons remain engaging. The Water Temple, for example, continues to challenge players with its logic puzzles, despite fewer keys and clearer solutions. Pro Mode enhances the experience for veterans by removing UI elements, allowing for a more immersive exploration.

Boss battles are thrilling puzzles that test players’ skills and creativity, with opportunities for unique strategies, such as using an empty bottle to deflect attacks. Hyrule is a treasure trove of secrets and playful surprises, rewarding curious players with hidden interactions and discoveries that enrich the adventure. This remake of Ocarina of Time is a resounding success, reinforcing the timeless allure of the Zelda series and offering an unforgettable journey for fans old and new.
