“I hope the image of a Seoul reduced to ashes in the game remains in the realm of fiction,” Han Dong-hoon remarked.
In Modern Warfare 4, the storyline begins with South Korean soldiers patrolling Seoul, only to face an unexpected assault from the North Korean military. The attack includes an EMP strike, missile bombardments, and ground troops infiltrating through tunnels, creating a scene of utter chaos reminiscent of the surprise Russian invasion in the original Modern Warfare 2. The game’s narrative focuses on the South Korean forces’ desperate efforts to repel the technologically superior North Korean army.
This fictional conflict feels particularly timely, as recent rumors suggested North Korean leader Kim Jong Un might be incapacitated, although these claims have been denied. Adding to the tension, Kim Jong Un’s sister, Kim Yo Jong, recently issued threats against South Korea. In the game, a similar power struggle occurs, with the Supreme Leader’s sister assuming control and declaring war, drawing unsettling parallels to real-world events.
Modern Warfare 4 also features a gameplay mode set in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), a real location on the Korean Peninsula’s border. Players complete missions and uncover the game’s backstory in this tense environment. Despite some criticism of its familiar multiplayer mode, IGN rated the game 7/10, praising its compelling campaign.
“Multiplayer may not quite hit the mark, but a great campaign ensures Modern Warfare 4’s place as one of Call of Duty’s better recent entries,” noted an IGN review.
