A higher-resolution OLED display would do wonders for the Steam Frame, especially for anyone using it for PCVR, rather than trying to play standalone games.
However, this upgrade could also come with a hefty price tag. The leaked specifications align closely with those of the Samsung Galaxy XR headset, which is priced around $1,799. Given current market conditions, particularly the ongoing RAM shortage, a new Steam Frame could be even more costly.
Initially, Valve aimed to revolutionize accessible PC hardware with the Steam Frame and its companion, the Steam Machine, both running on SteamOS. However, the RAM crisis has somewhat hindered their impact. Despite this, demand remains high, as both devices are sold out at present.
Just like the rest of Valve’s hardware this year, the Steam Frame was supposed to kick off a new era of accessible PC hardware, fueled by SteamOS at its center.
As Valve continues to process reservations and waitlists for the Steam Frame, any OLED version might still be far from release. The timing could also depend on Valve’s pursuit of the ideal chipset for a potential Steam Deck 2. For now, the future remains uncertain, and enthusiasts will have to stay tuned for further developments.
