Kutaragi also hinted at broader ambitions for Sony beyond gaming, suggesting that the company might eventually transition away from consoles entirely in favor of streaming solutions. This shift could address the increasing costs of hardware components, potentially eliminating the need for consoles altogether. However, he clarified that these are personal insights and not official statements from Sony.
Sony plans to phase out physical discs by 2028, despite anticipating significant public relations challenges. The company’s strategy aligns with consumer trends, as stated by Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, who noted that new games will be available solely in digital formats post-2028.
“As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.”
This transition is designed to match the growing preference for digital media, allowing Sony to better cater to its audience’s current gaming habits. However, players have expressed concerns over game preservation through various platforms, including PlayStation surveys, voicing their desire to retain physical copies.
