“These kinds of hostile forks put little to no effort into meaningfully contributing to existing projects, tearing apart our community fabric.”

The blog post further explains that opportunistic individuals are creating subpar ports from the hard work of hobbyists, resulting in barely functional versions of the games. @encounter notes that while some developers might be open to AI-assisted creations, it should be their choice to allow such modifications.

This wave of AI-driven decompilations is blurring the lines of what the decompilation community aims to achieve. Traditionally, decompiling games was motivated by a passion for understanding game mechanics. However, the current trend leans towards using AI to hastily produce PC ports, attracting individuals seeking quick solutions rather than genuine engagement with the community.

Despite these challenges, decomp.dev will continue to exist for tracking ongoing projects, but it will no longer support new ones, and the main index is being removed. While this move aims to curb the trend, the widespread availability of AI tools like Opus 5.5 and Astra 6 means that the practice is unlikely to diminish. Recent examples include makeshift ports of popular games like Halo: Combat Evolved and Grand Theft Auto 5, which were temporarily available on browsers before being shut down by publishers.

“A community built out of the love of programming is essentially dying off because a bunch of people with Claude subscriptions are using game developers’ work as a starting point and finishing it with AI.”

Ultimately, the decompilation community is facing significant disruption as AI technologies make it easier for individuals to co-opt the work of dedicated developers, overshadowing the original spirit of curiosity and passion that once defined the field.
