“Georgia Oakley’s Sense and Sensibility is a lush, picturesque Jane Austen adaptation whose story is far too emotionally plain.”

A significant issue arises from the portrayal of the Dashwoods’ financial struggles, exacerbated by their greedy half-brother John Dashwood (Tom Brooke) and his manipulative wife Fanny (Stacy Martin). The film’s visuals, captured in Arnaud Potier’s stunning 35mm photography, offer a vivid contrast, but the narrative fails to fully explore the characters’ complexities. Unlike previous adaptations, such as Ang Lee’s 1995 film, this version lacks the bubbly dynamic and intricate sisterly relationship pivotal to the story.

The film relies heavily on exposition to define Elinor and Marianne’s personalities, rather than allowing their actions to speak for themselves. This shortcoming becomes evident in scenes intended for humor, such as one involving Lady Middleton (Chloe Pirrie), which fall flat due to the surrounding characters’ lack of vibrancy. Despite standout performances from supporting actors like Fiona Shaw and Turlough Convery, the leads are overshadowed, struggling to inject vitality into the sisters’ relationship.

Oakley’s direction creates a convincing period atmosphere, yet the film’s emotional resonance is stifled by uninspired cinematography. The choice of medium shots maintains a lukewarm distance, neither drawing viewers into the characters’ emotions nor effectively commenting on the era’s societal absurdities.

“It’s an adaptation stuck in the middle, unable to decide between contemporary commentary on outdated social mores or full-tilt absorption into the era’s drama.”

Ultimately, this adaptation of “Sense and Sensibility” finds itself caught between a straightforward retelling and a tepid attempt at class satire. While the audience can interpret the characters’ concerns about status as either justified or trivial, the film fails to guide viewers toward a definitive understanding. Though it remains a watchable experience, the film could have offered much more depth and engagement.
