“We are moving to a family of devices for Gen-10,” Sharma reportedly stated. “There is not one device that fits all.”

Microsoft’s history of hardware diversification is evident in its previous launches, such as the Xbox Series X and Series S, alongside collaborations like the ROG Xbox Ally X with Asus. These moves highlight Microsoft’s readiness to expand its hardware lineup beyond traditional consoles. The upcoming family likely includes a successor to the Series X, developed in partnership with AMD, and potentially more Xbox-branded PCs, laptops, and handheld devices.

The memo also touches on the operating system’s evolution, a crucial component for user experience. Windows 11 has not been well-received on handheld gaming devices, and improvements are necessary for a seamless gaming interface, comparable to modern console UIs. Sharma acknowledges this challenge, indicating ongoing efforts to refine the Xbox Full Screen Experience.

“If Xbox is able to work out those kinks and deliver a Windows 11 (or 12) experience that’s as easy to use as the Xbox Series X, Project Helix could end up defining the next console generation.”

A significant aspect of Microsoft’s strategy involves leveraging its acquisition of Blizzard. The memo references Xbox PC and Battle.net, noting that Blizzard’s launcher is nearly on par with Steam in retaining users. This presents an opportunity for Xbox to expand its game offerings on this platform, but careful consideration of the Blizzard community’s preferences is crucial.

Sharma concluded with a commitment to enhancing user experience, emphasizing the importance of doing things “the right way for those communities.” If Microsoft can streamline its operating system and integrate its platforms effectively, Project Helix could redefine the landscape of the next console generation.
