“Revival often struggles to sustain tension, with enemy encounters that are all too easily manipulated.”

Revival introduces the Genesis Configuration, a reinvented puzzle box that grants Aiden telekinetic abilities. This feature adds a unique twist to combat, allowing players to hurl objects at foes. These powers, however, are limited by a ‘suffering’ bar that requires constant replenishment through grisly executions. The mechanics provide an engaging layer to combat, but the most powerful abilities arrive late in the game, offering little opportunity for use.

Boss battles are largely unremarkable, with few exceptions. The game features a flying adversary and a creature that traps players in a cage, adding some variety. However, most encounters are straightforward and repetitive, failing to deliver the excitement expected from such a horror title. Puzzles, though occasionally unique, are often simplistic, relying on familiar tasks like finding keys or deciphering codes.

“While the studded scalp of otherworld antagonist Pinhead absolutely looks the part, it’s a shame that little else in Hellraiser: Revival has been nailed to anywhere near the same extent.”

The game occasionally shifts to the Labyrinth, a foreboding realm inspired by MC Escher. These sections provide a welcome break from combat with their eerie atmosphere and environmental puzzles. However, overused chase sequences and minor technical glitches dampen the experience. Bugs like enemies clipping through walls and audio dropouts during boss fights disrupt immersion, although game-breaking issues are rare.

Ultimately, Hellraiser: Revival borrows heavily from classic survival horror without introducing significant innovations. With two possible endings stemming from a single choice, replayability is limited. Despite its reliance on established horror elements, the game offers a satisfying, albeit flawed, journey for fans of the genre. While it captures some of the chilling essence of the Hellraiser films, it lacks the polish and originality needed to stand out in the crowded landscape of horror games.
