“While the Brits and past European expeditions attempted to climb Everest for glory or national pride, Tenzing is on a spiritual quest to behold the face of Chomolungma.”
Peedom, drawing from her experience with documentaries like “Sherpa” and “Mountain,” balances breathtaking visuals with a deep exploration of cultural dynamics. The film examines the tensions between the British and the Sherpas, a distinct ethnic group, highlighting the camaraderie between Norgay and Hillary. Both outsiders in their own right, they forge a bond based on mutual respect and trust, crucial to their success.
The role of Tenzing is portrayed across different life stages by three actors: Samdrup Dorje Lama, Tenzin Dalha, and Genden Phuntsok. Phuntsok, in particular, shines as the older Norgay, bringing warmth and determination to the character. His chemistry with Tom Hiddleston’s Hillary is engaging, with Hiddleston respectfully playing a supporting role to Phuntsok’s lead. Their partnership keeps audiences invested in their journey, even with the known outcome.
“Phuntsok and Hiddleston make for an endearing pair and they keep the viewer invested in their journey even when you know they won’t perish.”
Supporting performances by Willem Dafoe and Caitríona Balfe add depth, though Balfe’s role as the secretary of the Himalayan Club is limited. Thinley Lhamo’s portrayal of Dawa, however, brings warmth and humor, illustrating why Norgay cherished her deeply.
While some may find “Tenzing” overly sentimental or simplistic in its depiction of Norgay’s triumphs, the film succeeds in celebrating an underdog’s spirit. It casts light on a lesser-known hero of the historic Everest expedition, offering an emotional narrative that resonates with hope and inspiration amidst challenging times.
Ultimately, “Tenzing” provides a long-overdue tribute to Norgay’s legacy, combining an inspiring tale of resilience with a rich cultural backdrop, ensuring his contributions to the 1953 Everest expedition are rightfully acknowledged.
