“There’s been some behind-the-scenes discussion that Sony has an exclusive of sorts with AMD for RDNA 5 for handheld.”

The handheld gaming market is becoming increasingly competitive, particularly with Intel’s recent launch of the Panther Lake chip. This new chip has outperformed AMD’s older RDNA 3.5-based Ryzen Z2 Extreme in tests, underscoring the need for AMD to elevate its offerings. However, the rising costs of handheld devices, exacerbated by a RAM shortage, could pose challenges. Sony’s potential use of RDNA 5 might set it apart, though it’s likely other manufacturers will eventually adopt this technology.

This isn’t Sony’s first foray into handheld rumors. Previous reports from Moore’s Law Is Dead hinted at a dockable, backward-compatible PS6 handheld. Additionally, there was mention of a PS6 S, speculated to be a more affordable alternative similar to the Xbox Series S.

“With how expensive handhelds have become lately, the whole category is in danger of vanishing until the RAM crisis abates.”
