“The Old Country is a potent and immersive time machine to a rarely explored era.”

Gameplay in The Old Country follows familiar third-person shooter mechanics, reminiscent of previous entries in the series, but with a twist of Wild West flair. Players engage in shootouts with era-specific weapons like revolvers and shotguns, sometimes on horseback, evoking classic Western imagery. While the AI can be inconsistent, the action remains engaging, allowing for both stealth and combat approaches. The stealth mechanics, though not groundbreaking, incorporate features like distraction tools and body hiding, adding depth to the gameplay.

Unique to this installment are one-on-one knife fights, which serve as boss encounters. These cinematic duels, while visually striking, can feel more like a prelude to cutscenes than high-stakes battles. Despite this, they add a fresh element to the series. The game also shines in its depiction of early 20th-century vehicles, capturing the raw sounds and feel of vintage automobiles, which enrich the driving experience and complement the historical setting.

“I’ve officially turned into my dad, and The Old Country is the game that did it.”

The Old Country stands out for its meticulous attention to detail, from capturing the essence of its historical period to the mouthwatering depiction of Italian cuisine. The game successfully transports players to a time when the Mafia was still in its infancy, offering a unique perspective on the era. While it may not reach the expansive scope of Rockstar’s Westerns, it shares their atmospheric depth and narrative focus.

Overall, Mafia: The Old Country is a satisfying return to the series’ roots, delivering a well-crafted story with excellent performances and a strong sense of place. Though it doesn’t revolutionize the genre, it provides a richly detailed and engaging experience that will appeal to fans of narrative-driven games and historical settings. With its compelling portrayal of early Mafia life and vivid depiction of Sicilian culture, The Old Country solidifies its place as a worthy addition to the series.
