“Street Fighter never lets good sense get in the way of a good time.”

Despite these narrative shortcomings, the chemistry between Koji and Centineo shines, especially during their dynamic exchanges. Their early hotel room fight exemplifies their contrasting styles, with Ryu’s calm and Ken’s manic energy creating a compelling dynamic. However, the film’s reliance on maximalist action sequences often overshadows these moments, with a scattershot approach to comedy and choreography that leaves little room for the audience to appreciate individual gags or stunts fully.

The film’s second half centers on the tournament, which serves more as a backdrop for action sequences than a coherent plot device. The action draws from a blend of Hong Kong cinema, anime, and retro movie influences, akin to “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.” While the choreography is impressive and executed skillfully by the cast and stunt team, the reliance on visual effects diminishes the visceral impact of the fights. Nevertheless, the movie’s eclectic cast of fighters, including Chun-Li (Callina Liang), Guile (Cody Rhodes), Vega (Orville Peck), Dhalsim (Vidyut Jammwal), and Cammy (Mel Jarnson), injects personality and humor into the narrative, even if their individual motivations are sidelined.

Standout performances come from Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki, Ken’s new best friend, and Eric Andre as the chaotic emcee Don Sauvage. Schulz’s portrayal of Dan evolves from a superficial character to one with genuine emotional depth, while Andre’s comedic energy consistently entertains. Cody Rhodes’ Guile, with his charismatic presence and punchline delivery, is another highlight, though his screen time is limited. Even minor characters like Blanka, played by Jason Momoa, leave a memorable impression with their quirky portrayals.

“Street Fighter is dumber than a box of rocks, but have you ever thrown rocks at things? It can be pretty fun with the right combination of enthusiastic friends and anarchic spirit.”

Ultimately, “Street Fighter” thrives on its cast’s enthusiasm and the film’s willingness to embrace its absurdity. While the narrative may be thin and the female characters underdeveloped, the performers’ dedication to the film’s over-the-top tone keeps it engaging. The film’s attempt to channel 1990s nostalgia through its setting and soundtrack mostly falls flat, but the overall experience is a testament to the fun that can be had with a chaotic, spirited approach. Despite its flaws, “Street Fighter” lands enough punches to entertain, delivering a wild ride for fans of the franchise.
