“Developer Auroch Digital has successfully elevated the intense run-and-gun action of the original game.”

Boltgun 2 offers four difficulty settings from Low to Exterminatus, catering to all types of players. You can also tweak gameplay settings like head bobbing and screen shake or even enable invulnerability. Playing on Medium difficulty, the campaign spans about eight hours per character. A standout feature is the introduction of a second playable character. Alongside Space Marine Malum Caedo, the fierce Sister of Battle, Nyra Veyrath, joins the fray. Their distinct combat styles and personalities add depth to the game. Caedo wields a Chainsword and grenades, while Veyrath uses a Powersword and Melta Bombs. Each character offers a unique experience, enhancing the game’s replayability with branching level options.

As you progress, you make strategic choices that influence the campaign’s direction. Optional side missions and battle locations allow for varied gameplay. In my first playthrough as Veyrath, I had to choose between battling in a blighted rainforest or a fortified beachhead. This decision-making process, combined with different characters and levels, keeps the gameplay fresh and engaging.

The game’s mission objectives are dynamic, often involving gladiatorial combat and strategic escapes. Each level presents unique challenges, such as destroying blood tanks to weaken enemies or navigating treacherous terrain. These diverse tasks prevent the game from becoming monotonous. Additionally, environmental elements like Purges and combat conditions add complexity. You occasionally fight alongside allies who boost morale and act as shields. Hazards like flaming pools and thick fog add to the chaos and conceal collectibles like Secrets and Seals.

Despite its strengths, Boltgun 2 faces some technical issues. Occasionally, enemies behave erratically, breaking immersion. Purges sometimes malfunction, leaving players stuck, and the movement can feel imprecise, particularly in later platforming segments. While these issues can be frustrating, they do not overshadow the game’s core strengths.

“Despite its strengths, Boltgun 2 faces some technical issues… but they do not overshadow the game’s core strengths.”

The art team at Auroch Digital deserves commendation for the game’s retro aesthetic. Characters are rendered with a nostalgic boomer shooter style, capturing the essence of Warhammer miniatures. The visually striking Daemonettes and Bloodcrushers stand out for their intricate designs. Each character model is rich with detail, adding a layer of personality to the game.

The atmosphere is further enriched by the protagonists’ context-specific dialogue. Rahul Kohli and Alanah Pearce deliver powerful performances as Caedo and Veyrath, respectively. The Servo-skull companion adds humor, offering lines that lighten intense combat. This blend of engaging combat and humor makes Boltgun 2 a unique experience.

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 builds on the original’s legacy, enhancing its thrilling gameplay with a new character, detailed designs, and complex level objectives. While technical issues may occasionally disrupt the flow, the game’s fast pace and character-driven dialogue create an engaging experience. Whether you’re a Warhammer enthusiast or a fan of classic shooters, Boltgun 2 promises an exhilarating adventure.
